How time flies. I had just celebrated my fiftieth birthday yesterday. As usual, the mini party only has the four of us plus my lovely niece whom I had taken care of when she was four years old until she turned fifteen. Knowing that I love coffee, she had bought me an espresso machine this time. Ironically, I was planning to get myself one after going through some espresso machine reviews three days ago. I was simply delighted by her gift as she could still remember what my favorite drink is after being apart from me for five years to pursue her studies oversea. She convinced me that espresso is the finest coffee drink that she drank almost daily while staying at UK. Whilst certain sectors of the drinks industry have weathered recession and found themselves wooing emerging new markets in Asia, others have been curiously declining within the same time. Wine is the industry that’s on the grow: records are being broken on Champagne sales and on other Chardonnay Wines and fine examples from Bordeaux. But what about other fine alcohols? Sherry is currently tending to a wounded knee after a year of price fixing fines, pension irregularities, and a June 29th Strike.
There is considerable concern that a follow-up strike during harvest time could prolong the decline of the industry. Sherry doesn’t exactly have an image problem, but neither is it a widely and fondly remembered beverage. Meanwhile, 6,000 hectares of sherry purposed vineyard are being uprooted after years of oversupply. The demand isn’t there, and industry squabbling will only lower the profile of this once fine drink. Thankfully, a new wave of producers are rising from the ashes – lets hope it’s not too late.
